What Comes After the Installation of Your Pool Lift?

glc_24-volt_battery_2011_12-150x150 Recreational facilities are now required to have pool lifts on all newly altered swimming pools, wading pools, and spas. When these ADA Standards first came out, there was a lot of confusion; how do you know if it is “readily achievable” and what if the facility already has a pool lift that isn’t mounted? As these standards have become more widely accepted and implemented, facilities have researched and found which pool lift is right for them. Research is the first step in this process for facilities.

Once these places have narrowed down what pool lift is right for their facility, the next step is implementation. There are certain regulations that these pool lifts must follow, including being placed in a pool in an area that is no more than 48 inches deep, as well as the center of the seat in a raised position must not be more than 16 inches from the edge of the pool. Other regulations in compliance with the 2010 ADA Standards can be found here.

The pool lift must be available whenever the pool is open and available for use to the public. Some facilities had pool lifts that were put away unless someone requested its use. This is no longer acceptable, as a pool lift that is always available helps eliminate the separation between those who are disabled and need this device and those who do not.

Once you have installed the pool lift, it is important to maintain its condition and usability. This means covering the lift during the cold months when your pool is not open. By leaving the lift uncovered, it can become exposed to the elements and you could shorten the overall life of the lift. It is also a good idea to have an extra battery on hand at all times. This will allow you to quickly switch out an old battery if needed so as to not hinder the accessibility of your pool. By doing this, you ensure that you are always following the ADA Standards at your facility.

Pool lifts help bring equal opportunities to all of the guests at your facility. Those individuals with disabilities are able to enjoy the pool or spa in the same way those without disabilities can. These ADA Standards are improving the lives of individuals with disabilities all across the country.
